Carers Victoria Forum

On Tuesday 15 October the Grampians Sector Development Team in conjunction with Carers Victoria held a Becoming Carer Aware session for CHSP Providers in Ararat. This session, held during National Carers Week, focused on attendees building a greater understanding of unpaid carers in our community and the aged care system.  There was also an opportunity for local providers to share the different carer support programs that are available for consumers within the Grampians region.

One of those programs was the Carer Support Program developed by East Grampians Health Services. Kelly Tillig – Carer Support Coordinator from East Grampians Health Services spoke about elements of the program and what other amazing activities they were undertaking for Carers Week. Some further information on the program is listed below for your perusal:

The East Grampians Health Services Carer Support Program aims to provide invaluable support to those who selflessly care for others, helping them recharge, discover new resources, and connect with fellow carers.  Recognising the vital role that carers play in the health system, this program seeks to enhance their well-being and in turn improve outcomes for the people they support.

The program offers a range of services designed to assist carers in managing their responsibilities while ensuring they receive the support they need.  Components of the program include:

Peer Connection – Foster a supportive community for carers.

  • Fortnightly meetings for two hours
  • Social gatherings with morning tea or lunch.
  • Possible guest speakers or activities during meetings.

Activities have included:

  • Walking around the lake
  • Watching movies
  • Playing croquet
  • Tours
  • Craft activities
  • Talks on areas of interest e.g. Orchids

Resource Discovery: - Provide carers with access to information and tools to aid in their caregiving.

  • Information on available services and funding.
  • Educational talks including dementia
  • Ararat Neighbourhood House
  • U3A presentations
  • Ararat Gallery
  • Supermarket shopping guides with dietitians
  • Activities and talks from physiotherapists and social workers

The Carer Support Program is not just beneficial for carers, it also has a positive impact on patient outcomes.  By providing emotional support, carers are better equipped to handle the challenges of their roles, which can lead to –

  • Improved Mental Health – Carers experience better mental wellbeing
  • Enhanced Recipient Care – Supported carers provide higher quality care,
  • Stronger Community Involvement – Connections among cares foster a sense of belonging and reduce isolation.

The East Grampians Health Services Carer Support Program is essential for creating a supportive environment for carers.  By prioritising their wellbeing, the program not only improves the quality of care they provide but also enhances outcomes for patients.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander: Language and Terminology

Non-Aboriginal Australians are often confused by terminology and can be afraid of joining conversations for fear of unintentionally using offensive or inappropriate language. Due to the diversity within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, it’s not possible to achieve consensus on all terms.

However, Australians Together have developed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Language and Terminology guidelines through a process of listening to First Nations people and non-Indigenous people and learning from existing work.
