Newsletter for Aged Care Workers

The Department of Health and Aged Care have launched Working in Aged Care Update, a monthly newsletter for aged care workers.

 
It includes:

  • information on initiatives and programs that can benefit workers and the people they care for
  • free resources, guides and training opportunities to boost workers skills and knowledge
  • updates on the changes to aged care relevant to workers.

The newsletter is easy to read and can be accessed from a phone, tablet or computer. You can subscribe with your email address or phone number.

Support at Home Program Provider Transition Guide

The Department of Health and Aged Care has produced a document that provides guidance on the actions Home Care Package providers and Short-Term Restorative Care providers should take to be operationally ready to transition to the Support at Home program.

Resources about the new Aged Care Act

The new Aged Care Act will start from 1 July 2025. It aims to respond to the issues facing aged care in Australia and puts the rights and needs of older people at the centre of our new aged care system.

Check out the Departmental resources that make the new Aged Care Act easier to understand:

  • Plain language summary of each chapter of the Act
  • Easy Read summary of each chapter of the Act
  • Summary of the changes made before it was approved as law.

New Aged Care Act Rules consultation: Funding

The Department of Health & Aged Care are now inviting feedback on the funding arrangements for the new Aged Care Act.

This is Stage 2b of our consultation on the new Aged Care Rules. This stage covers most of Chapter 4 of the new Act, which is about the funding of aged care services. 

More topics, including grants and accommodation payments, will be released for feedback at a later date.  

For guidance on the Rules covered in this stage of the consultation, read our supporting document. 

You can provide feedback on Stage 2b via our online form by 28 February.

 

Sector Readiness Plan

The Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission has released a high-level Sector Readiness Plan to assist the aged care sector in preparing for the new Aged Care Act from a regulatory perspective.

 

The plan provides a summary of the key resources that will be made available over the coming months. These will include guidance materials, webinars, fact sheets, videos, training programs and more on topics including:

 

  • strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards
  • provider registration
  • the Financial and Prudential Standards
  • worker regulation
  • compliance and enforcement
  • complaints handling.

 

The plan will be regularly updated with additional resources as they are confirmed, and the timelines for release may change subject to progress of the Act’s subordinate legislation.

New Financial and Prudential Standards will commence with the introduction of the new Aged Care Act from 1 July 2025. The new Standards set out the minimum requirements for good financial and prudential management of aged care providers. They are also designed to manage risks to people receiving care and the public.

 

Hosted by the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commissioner, Liz Hefren-Webb, this webinar will cover:

  • the requirements and provider obligations under the proposed standards
  • the provider’s role in strengthening financial and prudential operations
  • the Commission’s approach to regulation.

Clinical Care/Governance Workshops

 

The Grampians Sector Development Team in conjunction with Gateway Health, Bellarine Community Health and West Gippsland Healthcare Group are pleased to offer a two-part series of Clinical/Care Governance Workshops facilitated by Claire Edwards, Founder of b.school4homecare, TAG Health. These workshops are designed to empower organisations in community aged care programs with the skills and knowledge needed to develop and implement an effective clinical governance framework. Under the new Aged Care Act community aged care providers must have clear clinical governance frameworks which focus on ensuring safe, high-quality care for all consumers.

 

These sessions are suitable for Quality and Compliance Managers, Executive Management and Program Managers from CHSP Service Providers who are keen on mastering clinical/service governance, risk management and data proficiency.

  • Explore the critical components of clinical governance.

  • Gain an understanding of the essential components of clinical governance and how they apply to community aged care settings.
  • Learn about the importance of data analysis and risk assessments. How to use data effectively to identify potential risks and implement proactive strategies to mitigate them.
