AGED CARE SECTOR
Innovate for Impact – Pillar 4
‘Empowered people is the glue that holds it all together. It’s about having all processes, systems, tools and resources so that your people can make change across the organisation.’
Please find some further information below on making changes within your organisations and how to empower tour staff to do this.
From 1 July, older people will be able to register supporters to help them make decisions about their care. Supporters can advocate for older people's rights and preferences.
An older person's ability to make decisions and share their preferences may change from day to day, or over time. It's important to know who an older person's supporters are and what role they play, to make sure the older person's rights are respected.
Providers can help by:
being aware of the role of registered supporters and supported decision-making more broadly
promoting an environment where the wishes of older people are respected.
The My Aged Care representative arrangements will stay in place until the supporter arrangements start.
The Department of Health & Aged Care has contacted and given guidance to Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) providers that have historically provided CHSP services to unassessed clients.
Your organisation will not be able to keep providing services to CHSP clients without an aged care assessment, unless they have an assessment by 30 June.
If your organisation was contacted by your Funding Arrangement Manager and received a letter from the Department, contact your unassessed CHSP clients who receive government-subsidised services as soon as possible. Please contact your unassessed clients who receive services on a regular basis (7 to 12 months of the year). The Department do not have contact information for these clients.
As it can take time to receive an aged care assessment, please support your impacted clients to request an assessment through My Aged Care as soon as possible.
Reflective Conversation Workshop: Garry & Les’s Story
Join us as we explore the challenges faced by some older Australians when accessing in home aged care services.
In this interactive workshop we will use the case study of Garry and Les, which highlights one couple’s journey of accessing in-home aged care services.
During this workshop we will use the case study to:
Understand the impact of history on older LGBTIQA+ people including barriers to accessing aged care services.
Identify the challenging experiences some people from diverse communities and backgrounds may have receiving services within their homes.
Explore the importance of providing safe and welcoming services and key actions to demonstrate inclusion, including Specialisation Verification Framework and the benefits to both clients and providers.
Find practical ways to demonstrate person centred care and respond to the diverse experiences, values and needs of each service user in line with the new Aged Care Act and strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards.
Target Audience:
Program Managers, Team Leaders and Coordinators from CHSP service providers.
In aged care, supporting independence and choice is more than a principle—it’s a right. Under the new Aged Care Act and the Statement of Rights, every older person must be supported to exercise their independence, autonomy, empowerment, and freedom of choice—even when that choice involves some degree of risk. This is the essence of Dignity of Risk (DoR)—the right of individuals to make informed decisions about their lives, including those that carry potential risks.
To better understand how Dignity of Risk is currently perceived, implemented, and managed across the CHSP, we are inviting you to complete a short survey.
Why take part? Your insights will help identify real-world challenges and opportunities and inform practical strategies to strengthen sector capability in applying DoR with older people.
Time commitment: About 8 minutes Confidentiality: All responses are de-identified
Survey closes: 5.00pm on Wednesday 16 April 2025
The results will be used by the National Sector Support & Development Wellness and Reablement Working Group to consider tools and resources that support best practice.
With the introduction of Support at Home and the Aged Care Act commencing in July, providers and experts will share insights and strategies to help providers navigate these transitions and achieve optimal outcomes. The day will focus on the following areas:
With a degree in Physiology, Sport Science and Nutrition, Ashley is a Corporate Leader, Trainer, Mental Health Ambassador and Speaker.
Ashley's presentation - Finding Balance: How to Lower Stress & Restore Balance - will share simple steps that your team can take right away to help restore harmony, reduce stress and cultivate resilience, enabling them to prioritise their mental and physical wellbeing.
